Wildlife At Labyrinthia Guest House

At Labyrinthia Guest House, time slows down and beauty finds you. Nestled in an 1847 Cape on 50 private acres, it’s more than a place to stay—it’s a place to breathe. Gardens, trails, a welcoming home, and quiet moments await. Here, comfort isn’t offered—it’s understood.

Experience Nature

The following list is only a snapshot of birds found in the Labyrinthia Garden by a guest who travels all over to locate and identify birds. He is an associate of the Audubon Society. He stayed here twice in 2024. The list that follows identifies the birds seen by him here with their common names.

Several guests booked rooms at the same time as he did in February 2024. That was when the North Hawk Owl appeared in Dover Foxcroft, Maine, a few towns away. This owl is rarely seen this far south, which drew many birders to the area.

The list is of birds spotted over several days’ visit. This garden is a magnet for birds and wildlife and was planned that way. I had read an article before moving here that appeared in Audubon Magazine. It discussed creating an oasis or island of fruiting and flowering shrub and trees to attract birds. This garden oasis is in the center of an open pasture.

With a diverse collection of annuals and perennials, the garden is home to bugs, bunnies, butterflies, and birds. This garden contains fruit trees, brambles, even gooseberries, and Logan berries too. There are highbush cranberries that the Grossbeaks visit in spring for the flowers’ petals, and in the fall for the red fruit. There are trees, thorny barberry shrubs, and roses for the birds to nest in. Hidden places where the wild cats and coyotes cannot get at them or the baby chicks.

Wisdom is that if you are in the garden and do not hear birds, a predator is in the vicinity. It is enjoyable to sit in the garden and have birds surrounding you singing their individual songs. Take a cup of tea or coffee and go for a walk in the garden. Find one of the hidden sitting spots and stop to hear the birds while visiting Labyrinthia Guest Here.
